What is a Pharmacy Technician?

Pharmacy technicians play a critical role in the healthcare field. A pharmacy technician will work closely with pharmacists and other healthcare professionals in a variety of settings to help provide patients with safe and effective medication therapies. Be mindful that the role of a pharmacy technician will vary from setting to setting.

Roles and responsibilities of a pharmacy technician:

  • Prepare and distribute patient medications

  • Perform calculations

  • Prepare sterile medications

  • Process third party billing claims

  • Assist customers with the purchase of their medications

  • Use technology to help maintain accurate patient records, medication inventory, and orders

  • Restock automated medication dispensing systems

The role of a Pharmacy Technician is constantly evolving. State laws will decide what a pharmacy technician can and can not do. For example, in some states pharmacy technicians can call physicians for prescription refill authorizations.

In previous blogs, I have discussed what it is like to work in different settings. Please, take some time to view those as well if you have not already!
