What is a Pharmacy Technician?
Pharmacy technicians play a critical role in the healthcare field. A pharmacy technician will work closely with pharmacists and other healthcare professionals in a variety of settings to help provide patients with safe and effective medication therapies. Be mindful that the role of a pharmacy technician will vary from setting to setting.
Roles and responsibilities of a pharmacy technician:
Prepare and distribute patient medications
Perform calculations
Prepare sterile medications
Process third party billing claims
Assist customers with the purchase of their medications
Use technology to help maintain accurate patient records, medication inventory, and orders
Restock automated medication dispensing systems
The role of a Pharmacy Technician is constantly evolving. State laws will decide what a pharmacy technician can and can not do. For example, in some states pharmacy technicians can call physicians for prescription refill authorizations.
In previous blogs, I have discussed what it is like to work in different settings. Please, take some time to view those as well if you have not already!
